MRU Prof publishes Major Study on Modern Spain

Modern SpainDr. Enrique Lopez, Associate Professor in the Department of Humanities, shares his feelings upon receiving the package from his publisher, containing copies of his new major book on Modern Spain (www.abc-clio.com/ABC-CLIOCorporate/product.aspx?pc=A4275C).

I am having breakfast (coffee and toast covered with ripe tomatoes) while I am reading the news from Spain. Suddenly, somebody rings the bell and leaves a package at the front door. It is a big box that contains the three complementary copies of my second book, for which I was anxiously waiting, having worked intensely on it for the last three years. I studied Spanish Philology and it never came to my mind that I was going to write a book on Spain… and in English!

Dr. LopezThis book contains almost everything I have been teaching first in the UK and now in Canada. Since I started teaching Spanish, I became more and more fascinated by the rich culture of Spain. Our students majoring in Spanish become bilingual but not necessarily bicultural, which requires a deep understanding of the intricacies of a country. With this book, I hope I have helped students with an interest on Spain to better understand not only the history of the language but also the nuances of one of Europe's oldest nations.
